Chimney tile liners can crack during a chimney fire, and can be repaired by relining. A look at the inside of this chimney shows how fire has attacked this flue. The original clay liner has eroded away; pieces of it are even missing. In severe cases, the chimney erosion will lead to partial or complete internal collapse, blocking the flue and sending these poisonous gases into the home.

But fortunately, the problems of a deteriorating wood or fireplace flue can be corrected. Relining involves inserting a new central lining or flue inside an existing chimney.
